Pro Tips

  • When you jump while performing a slide you can carry the speed of the slide into the air. Try using this technique to reach those hard-to-get coins.
  • Press Pause to access some additional options, like toggling the ghost player and Restarting the level.
  • Holding Down when you land on a platform will let you fall through the platform after a moment. If you hold Down before you land on the platform, you can fall straight through to save some precious seconds!
  • The Gold medal is the fastest time you can view for each level, but there is another hidden medal that's even faster than Gold. Do you have what it takes to beat the Platinum time?

Background

This is not my first PICO-8 project, but it's the first one that I've turned into a final product.  I wanted to make a game that would be incredibly simple to pick up, yet tricky to use the mechanics to their fullest.   I feel I was mostly successful in doing this!  But I also feel that the character movement could still use improvement.

The medal system was inspired by the same kind in Trackmania, and the slide-jump movement mechanics were inspired by Kirby's Adventure, which I've only just recently played in the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition.  In fact, I would say Oscar's Adventure is my attempt to replicate the feeling that NES Championships game gave me when I would improve on my speedrun times.

I hope to post some of my other PICO-8 projects in the near future, so consider following my adventure!

First this is a really cute platformer. It has a nice feel and sound design but despite that I do have 2 concerns and critiques.

  1. The character feels too floaty for my taste. Even though the character feels floaty you have to be very precise in your jumps to make them perfectly. Because of both of these factors I often overcorrect resulting excessive falls.
  2. While floating on the air streams you should be able to float indefinitely. You should also be able to have better air control. Such as pressing the 'Up Arrow' key to float higher. There are also some fans that you can just fall through resulting in unwanted resets also.

Other than that, this is a nice game. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks for the excellent feedback!
